A village one
passes, before they reach Xerokampos, Hametoulo (at the moment with just 4
inhabitants...), is the place of birth of the Theodorakis family. Here one
also finds the entrance of the Hametoulo ravine, which ends in Xerokambos.
From Ziros a very kurvy road leads down after Xerokambos.
At Xerokambos area you can visit the ancient Hellenistic settlement of Ambelos,
where there are the ruins of the ancient town.

A little bit further you will find the well-known beach of Argilos.
The visitors can have mud bath and massage there, because of the argillaceous soil.
On the north side of Xerokambos, you can see the salt lake or "Alatsolimni" as the natives call it.
It is a very important biotope of the area, where you can meet big migrant bird from time to time and other kinds of animals.
Ending with it, it is a must to visit Hametulo gorge, which starts at the northeast side of Xerokambos, near the asphalted road of Xerokambos-Ziros.
After 2 hours walking, the reward is the visit at Hametoulo, the picturesque traditional small village.
It is said that Hametoulo is the oldest habitable village on Crete!
